We didn’t set out to make a famous pie.
In fact, when we first put cheese & onion on the menu at The Wheatsheaf, it was just meant to be a solid, reliable option. Something comforting. Something you’d actually want to eat after a long walk, a cold day, or—let’s be honest—a couple of pints.
But somewhere along the way, it became a thing.
It Starts With the Simple Stuff
There’s no secret ingredient. No fancy twist. No attempt to reinvent anything.
It’s just good cheese. Proper onions. And taking the time to cook them down so they’re soft, sweet, and full of flavour before they go anywhere near the pastry.
That’s it.
Well… that and not cutting corners.
The Bit That Matters Most
A cheese & onion pie sounds simple—and it is—but it’s also very easy to get wrong.
Too wet, and it collapses.
Too dry, and it’s disappointing.
Too bland, and what’s the point?
Getting that balance right, every single time, is what we focus on. It’s not glamorous, but it’s what makes people come back for it.
Proper Pub Food, Done Properly
We’ve always believed that pub food should be exactly what you want it to be:
- Generous
- Comforting
- Consistent
No tiny portions. No overcomplication. Just something that arrives at the table and makes you think, “yes, that’s exactly what I wanted.”
The pie fits that perfectly.
The Reputation Bit…
We started noticing it when people began coming in and ordering it before they’d even sat down properly.
Then it was:
“We’ve driven over just for the pie.”
And now it’s become one of those things where if someone hasn’t tried it, whoever they’re with will say:
“You have to get the cheese & onion pie.”
We won’t argue with that.
If You Know, You Know
If you’ve had it before, you’ll know exactly what we mean.
If you haven’t… well, you probably should.
Pop in, bring the dog, grab a pint—and see what all the fuss is about.
